#133 : Minky Momo vs. Creamy Mami

MMvCM1The ultimate magical girl showdown of the 1980s. A crossover that much like lightning in a bottom, flashes and then disappears. In the span of three short minutes all will be decided as who should be crowned the ultimate 1980s magical girl. In the left corner, debuting in 1982 and representing Ashi Production we have Minky Momo! (CHEERS!) And in the right corner, debuting in 1983 and representing Studio Pierrot we have Creamy Mami! (CHEERS!) Ladies, gentlemen, undecided, non-binaries and every other designation of beautiful people I present to you Minky Momo vs. Creamy Mami! Alright now let’s keep it clean girls… no hitting below the belt… GO!

MMvCM2The year was 1985 and the fairly new direct to video format of the OVA was in full swing. Several new properties would be introduced on this format, but there was another side to creating anime for this market. Previously created properties, in particular television series that had successful, or moderately successful runs, would get new breathes of life from this format. For the two iconic early 80s magical girl shows Fairy Princess Minky Momo and Magical Angel Creamy Mami, this would be the case. Two all new, almost feature length productions, would debut. For Minky Momo there was La Ronde in my Dream and for Creamy Mami there was Long Goodbye.

MMvCM3Occasionally OVAs would have a theatrical screening, which more than likely, was to promote the videos themselves. Plus! You can see these video on the big screen… WOW! I And this is where Minky Momo vs. Creamy Mami comes into the scene. From my research, these two videos were shown as a double header and this short video was like a teaser, a welcome, a short introduction. There is not much to review, or describe, as the two girls meet, shake hands and then… fight it out in an over the top style that recalls much to say Project A-Ko. It’s fun, quick, cute and easy to find on Youtube. What more can you ask for? Chocolate cake maybe?

So the question becomes who wins the match… Minky Momo, or Creamy Mami? I say neither as it all ends in a draw. The real winners are those of us who watch and cheer and get all obsessed over these awesome cartoons. Minky Momo vs. Creamy Mami is what being a fan of anime is all about!

#126 : Magical Angel Creamy Mami

cm_1To be forever young… is it truly possible? My two cents says that without question and I will stake everything on it, that all magical girls do remain forever young. The pride and joy as well as perhaps the biggest backbone for all that is shojo in anime, the magical girl, is a genre and an archetype without peer. The 1980s witnessed a rebirth and reinvention of the magical girl and one in particular would be a leading example for one particular studio as well as a generation. In 1983, Studio Pierrot would marry magical girls into the world of the pop idol with Magical Angel Creamy Mami… thus a legend was born.

cm_2Two things hit me when I watched this show. First it’s adorable; can’t deny that. Though when you mention to people you are watching a classic title like Magical Angel Creamy Mami, especially those who are not in the know about anime in general, they may think it is some sort of porn title. IT’S NOT!!! Cream Lemon yes, Creamy Mami NO! This is a sweet wholesome show, something you can watch with the whole family… just an awkward title. And second, did Jem and the Holograms derive any influence from this show? Magic transformations and pop music idols are rampant in both shows. Maybe its a coincidence? Although to be frank both shows are completely different in approach, but I could not help but find a parallel between two shows made around the same time. Anyway on with the main program…

cm_3Miss Yuu Morisawa… our protagonist… a plain jane, average in many ways and very independent, but in a sweet way. She does not technically stand out, even to the boy that she is infatuated with (shame on you Toshio), yet behind the normality there lurks much potential. I appreciate that she is an opposite to the popular Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon). Yuu is not quote, a dumb blonde, a ditz… annoying. Perhaps this is more than likely why I have issue with watching Sailor Moon. Yuu is the type of character I can identify with, I can root for and also hold a series together. Often times a show is as good as it’s cast, story and plot can be interchangeable, with the main character acting as a bedrock, perhaps the identity of a show itself. It was you Yuu Morisawa that made me love Creamy Mami.

Blessed with magical powers from outer space (Feather Star… nice name for a planet), Yuu is given her traditional magic wand within a fancy compact and two cute mini alien cats as guardians, which aid her as she turns from a ten year old into a glamorous sixteen year old with a singing voice and purple hair. PURPLE HAIR… love it! Yet, this power is only granted for one year. Our story thus creates a dichotomy. Average school and pop princess must find a balance in both scheduling, and knowing one’s true identity. Yuu is level headed enough to know that Mami is still Yuu and not get lost into the world of celebrity as it at times can get ridiculous. Not a bad twist of fortune for the daughter of a family that runs a local crepe shop.

cm_4Underneath all the magical girl fun, the great color pallet used, the slapstick comedy and the danceable music, we have a romance. Perhaps even a love triangle, that is between two people, yet three identities. Again I have to reference Jem for that one. Yuu and Toshio are made for each other yet there are sparks that fly, but when the moments are right, there is true love. Be on watch near the middle of the episode running for a great plot twisting that will not again play out until the near end. The entire show turns upside down as the secret of Mami is revealed to a special someone.

Magical Angel Creamy Mami opened the flood gate for Studio Pierrot’s other mahou shojo shows that featured Persia (Magical Fairy Persia), Emi (Magical Star Magical Emi)  and Yumi (Magical Idol Pastel Yumi) later in the decade. But there is only one original and that is you Mami. Shine bright forever! Between you, Minmei (Macross) and Eve (Megazone 23), I have my power trio of pop idols that help keep me young… FOREVER!

#94 : Rainbow Brite

RB_1Magical girls are not mutually exclusive to Japan alone. After all the influence of the original magical girl Sally the Witch was based off of the character Samantha Stevens from the popular 1960s TV show Bewitched. But what if the west could create a property that pays homage to Japan’s homage to something that was in the west previously? Or, is it more like the Hallmark Card company gave a toy concept to the production company DiC and they thought, hey we can make her a magical girl? It doesn’t matter how it all happened, the only thing that matters is that it’s time to talk about a legend among legends. Miss Rainbow Brite herself… Hip Hip Hooray!

RB_2Before I begin I will be the first to say that Rainbow Brite is not officially an anime, but she belongs here at CAM. First she was created during the 1980s (1983 for the toys and 1984 for the first animated installment). Two, Rainbow Brite, at least according to Wikipedia, was broadcast in Japan as well as the west. Three, the preproduction was all American and French via DiC, but the heavy lifting, being the drawings and animation, was completely Japanese in origin via TMS (Tokyo Movie Shinsa). And not just TMS the company, but one of their best directors (and one of my all time favorites), Osamu Dezaki, worked on the show. Though this show looks nothing like Dezaki’s signature style. And four… number four… I love Rainbow Brite and since I am the boss here, the verdict stands. After all I need some more color and happiness around here. …and more 80s cartoons as well for nostalgia and to prove that my generation had awesome entertainment. 🙂

RB_3The premise is very simple… a little girl named Wisp is cast into a world of darkness and  meets up with various friends (the Color Kids and Sprites), a “magnificent horse, the glory of the galaxy” (Starlight’s got some confidence) and the powerful color belt to spread joy, happiness and color all over Rainbowland and our world as well. Together they hold back the naughtiness of the ill-behaved Murky and his second in command Lurky (HEY MURKY!!) by halting their plans of bringing gloom and darkness into the world. Can’t we all just get along here? This is yet another simple story of duality where our hero takes on an antagonist and triumphs in the end. Except we have it all in nice full color; I mean you would expect nothing less from a show titled Rainbow Brite? I think so. That and being a product of the 1980s, a colorful decade in more ways than one, expect nothing less.

RB_4So here is a fun exercise, in what ways does western Rainbow Brite differ to other magical girls of Japanese origin? Perhaps the biggest and most obvious, is the fact that Rainbow herself does not transform from a mundane identity. She is all who she is and lives in the wonders of Rainbowland and not in our world as some average middle, or high school girl. Therefore, she does not have the typical magic wand which aids in the transformation process. Rainbow has her fingers, loads of star sprinkles and the previously mentioned color belt as tools for her magic. As a character Rainbow is almost a mediatory between the later (1990s) hero type of magical girl, like Sailor Moon, and the contemporary (1980s) idol good girls of Creamy Mami and Minky Momo. What of these differences in the grand scheme of things? I say they are welcome!

Now here is a question… why only 13 episodes of content? I believe the initial episodes were more geared for direct to video while the later filled out a run for Saturday morning broadcast. Still, Rainbow Brite had possibilites here. Yet why cry over what did not happen and celebrate what did come to fruition instead. After all, Rainbow wants us all to have a great day. Actually, that should be more like… A GREAT DAY!

#82 : Cutie Honey

CH_1We need a hero… right here and right NOW! Not just any hero, but a warrior of love. Ai no Senshi! And we need a lady to do this job, because guys I am sorry, you and I have had enough of being the champion. It is time for the ladies to shine, transform and kick butt. And, NO!… Sailor Moon you need to sit down my dear because you have to meet your awesome auntie who did it all first. Sometimes she is a news reporter, sometimes a fashion model, or sometimes a motorcycle racer, but to me, she is just awesome. She is after all, the one, the only… Cutie Honey. Or perhaps it’s Honey Kisaragi? Cue that famous tagline… Honey Flash!

CH_2Now I will be the first to admit that I love 60s camp. Even though Cutie Honey was a product of 1973, it retains all the over the top theatrics of say Barbarella, Modesty Blaise and maybe I am stretching it Valley of the Dolls (Neely O’ Hara!… OK, I am stretching a little). But the bright colors, the over the top acting, the parody (either intended or not) and all that big hair and fashion is simply fun. Now add all that into a magical girl show, but instead of an ordinary human lady, let’s make our pretty girl an android. And this story also needs a shonen fighter sensibility as well just because. That should be all the ingredients we need, now lets make this show rock!

CH_3Go Nagai, you sir have a twisted mind, and yet brilliant as well. From the guy who sprang forth titles ranging from Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, Devilman and even the lewd Violence Jack would come Cutie Honey. And it shows, in particular with the bad ladies of the criminal organization Honey fights each episode, the nefarious Panther Claw. These villainesses of the week come in all shapes, sizes and with the wildest choices of costuming to boot. I have never seen the female form look as beautiful and/or grotesque at the same time. And then you have the leaders of Panther Claw, Panther Zora and Sister Jill. Sister Jill, with her dominatrix costume and well endowed figure, I am sure made many young boys lust over the bad girl instead of our heroic Honey. But then again, Honey has a fan club a mile long…

CH_4Such as those Hayami boys. Honey’s boyfriend Seiji, his father Danbei and his younger brother Junpei all show their devotion and attraction to ‘Miss It Girl’ Honey usually by comedic means. More than just comic relief, when Honey is in a jam, or needs a second hand, she can rely on the skills of the Hayami clan. And then there is Miss Alphonse… could be a lesbian, could just be enamored by Honey’s beauty, or could it just be that mustache? Honey has yet another reason to skip class besides being a little rebellious. Oh how it is to be so popular. Of course her looks are not what makes her attractive to Panther Claw. That necklace she wears around her neck is their prey. With it she can transform to all her alter egos, besides that it is one hell of a McGuffin device.

And now for something completely different… let’s talk music. In particular the themes, both the opener and the closer. These are perfect gems that have been resurrected in every reincarnation of our hero Honey. But the original versions… timeless. The opening is funky, funny and catchy beyond belief with the punchy bass, fuzzy guitar and string and horn sections scream the pop music of the day. I say, it’s time to dance and shake it. Now the closer on the other hand is a soft ballad that could have been a product of say Burt Bacharach production and arrangement. It still stands for me as one of the best songs I have ever heard in anime. It’s kind of romantic, like a great dance song.

A staple of 1970s Japanese animation, a classic soundtrack and an iconic hero. A triple powerhouse combination on why Cutie Honey lives on in it’s original and more current adaptations (including an awesomely bad live action version). When evil calls we will always have Honey Kisaragi to save the day. “I’m changing now”… wink!

#72 : Fairy Princess Minky Momo: La Ronde in my Dream

LRinD_1Fairy Princess Minky Momo, the TV series, is one of those backlog shows that I have been wanting to see for quite a while. Alas, I have only come across the first episode with English subtitles up to the writing of this review, but the follow up OVA of 1985, La Ronda in My Dream, is easier to obtain. So I suppose I will start my foray into Minky Mono-land with this production. This reminds me in a way to GoShogun, a mecha series from 1981, where my only exposure has been to the Goshogun: The Movie (a recap) and GoShogun: The Time Etranger (one of my all time favorite anime). And the irony, in two points, both shows are from the studio Ashi Production and the main female protagonists (Minky Momo and Remy Shimada in Goshogun) are voiced by Mami Koyama (again a favorite). Could be coincidence, but maybe not?

LRinD_2The story begins by giving an overall plot overview, which then cuts into a concert that Minky’s parents are attending. She of course is backstage helping perhaps one of the performers, or even a patron’s pet cat (Minky Momo and family have a pet shop and vet clinic). The promoter soon rushes in to announce that the main star of the show will not be appearing and Minky Momo has an idea and tells him she knows somebody. Now since this is a magical girl show, it’s time to reveal Minky Momo’s transformational powers. She can turn from her usual 10 year old self (I am guessing her age) into a variety of heroic versions of herself (kind of like Cutie Honey), but at about the age of say 18-19. So the star of tonight’s show will be none other than Minky Momo herself, though no one really knows her secret (well except her three animal friends). And much like the magical girls of Studio Pierrot, Minky Momo is now a musical idol, if only for this song.

LRinD_3The musical number was a hit and now comes the drawing for a couple’s vacation to the South Pole. How romantic, more like ironic (too cold for romance, but then again you can be close to each other for warmth?). And low and behold, Minky Momo’s parents win! What a surprise, so it’s time to pack up because our magical girl is going to have the house to herself. PARTY!!! But wait… when all seems to be going good, except you burnt your breakfast Momo, the TV announces that the plane with Momo’s parent had crashed over an island that has been having some weird issues as of late. In no time, Momo and her animal crew get into the Gourmet Pop (car and trailer combo that can FLY!) and head out to find what has happened. So begins the fun! Just be ready to meet an island of children and their leader… Peter Pan! And no Captain Hook or Tinkerbell, fyi.

LRinD_4Interesting is that this OVA was brought over to the west eons ago from Harmony Gold (yes they did more than Robotech) and known as Gigi and the Fountain of Youth. It’s a solid adaptation, but in terms of the 80s I am sure Gigi would have gotten lost to bigger names like Care Bears, My Little Pony, or Rainbow Brite on this end of the world. I never heard of this version until recently, but I am sure some of you out there may have had this on VHS. And speaking of Rainbow Brite, Minky Momo reminds me of the star sprinkle carrying cherub faced creation of the Hallmark Company. Both girls try to spread joy and happiness and use magic and though they are a little different, they are both welcome to help me on a tough day. The 80s, bright colors and magical girls… I miss my early youth.

I want a slice of fun with an accent on the cute; I get my cake and I eat it too! Minky Momo, girl, you need more presence, more love, more in general. After all, you brought the magical girl genre into the 1980s and along with the likes of Creamy Mami, evolved it into a more modern context well before the behemoth of Sailor Moon. Ms. Momo, you will always have my deepest respect and La Ronde in my Dream is an honorable and solid title needed for any collection.
