10 Ladies Who Defined Mecha Excellence… 80s Edition (Part 2)

Hey you pilot that giant robot like a girl! Once considered a “man’s job”, like several other jobs, the occupation of being a mecha pilot has over the years shown that skill and finesse are not confined to one’s gender. “Anything you can do I can do better, I can do anything better than you, No you can’t… oh hell yes I CAN!”

Let us now pay tribute to a selection of ladies who are some of the best giant robot pilots EVER! And yeah, it’s an all 80s cast… as usual… you know me, no matter what year it is, to me it can still be 1987, or 1982, or 85, 89, 86… etc. etc. A small note, this will be a listing of pilots I know from shows I have seen. This means in the future I can create additional entries once I become aware of even more talented pilots. For this second round I pick…

Sara Yuki
Dancougar

ME_Sara

The Cyber Beast team’s only female member and pilot of the Land Cougar. Haunted by the love for her ex who defected early on to the enemy, Sara is perhaps the most complex character in all of Dancougar. Also has some of the best 80s hair in my opinion!

Haruka Kaga/Lisa
Armored Fleet Diarugger XV/Voltron

ME_Haruka

Piloting one of the submarine like mechs, the Aquatic Space Explorations Prober, that is Dairugger’s/Voltron’s right thigh, Haruka/Lisa is a valuable member of the Keats/Sea Team.

Kazumi Amano
Aim For the Top! Gunbuster

ME_Kazumi

The idol of the academy and the most talented senior admired by everyone who looks to be the obvious shoo-in for the Gunbuster project. The coach thinks so as well and decides to pair her up with a novice freshman, which at first seems a little ironic.

Iczer-1 & Nagisa
Fight! Iczer-One

ME_Izcer1_Nagisa

Meet the renegade Cthulhu who has more interest in saving the Earth and it’s people instead of invasion and conquering and her partner, a fairly typical high school girl. Much like a call to action, it is Iczer-1 who brings the hero out of the timid Nagisa.

Houquet et Rose/Rook Bartley
Genesis Climber Mospeada/Robotech

ME_Houquet

A streetwise girl on a motorcycle who is part of a rag tag group of rebels trying to get to Reflex Point, the home base of the invading alien race the Inbit/Invid. Just be careful during the journey when you bump into your own hometown and see an old boyfriend and your mom.

Ikuuru
Dragon’s Heaven

ME_Iruuku

The things you find in a desert on a random day… A wandering nomadic girl happens to find a fossil of a warrior mech, Shaian, and quickly becomes great friends with the sentient wonder. Soon they fight Shaian’s old rival together and live happily ever after. How cute!

Mia Alice
Dangaioh

ME_Mia

Mia was the first Dangaioh pilot to wake up and be put to the test of demonstrating her skills. She is the most quiet and gentile member of the Dangaioh team, but also the most capable of demonstrating leadership. Her superpower is that of moving energy which can act as a shield.

Galaria (Garalia) Nyamhee
Aura Battler Dunbine

ME_Galaria

A talented and promising native Byston Well pilot who seems to always have a grudge on her shoulder. She is a strong feminist who believes that because of her gender she is always being overlooked for promotion… or perhaps part of it is her personal frustration?

Mary Angel/Marie Crystal
Super Dimension Calvary Southern Cross/Robotech

ME_Mary

The tough as nails ace pilot for the Tactical Armored Space Corps whose no nonsense attitude and approach gives her a reputation of being an ice queen. Yet beneath the exterior she is very vulnerable and never lets that get in the way of her duty… except for that one time.

Athena Henderson
Super Dimension Century Orguss

ME_Athena

The emerging young ace pilot for Chiram Army who finds a rival in the supposed Singularity, or as the English dub called him, the Differentiated Idioblast? The only catch is the fact that this man that she hates so much is her long lost father… wait, what! NO!! This can’t be true, NO!!!

Claiming to be the best pilot of all the Zentraedi, or Meltrandi depending on which version of the story you are watching, Milia/Miriya backs up her bravado with ultimate skill. In a twist of fate there exists a member of Earth’s forces who not only bested her on the battlefield, but also her heart as well. Can love conquer all? It does in Macross!

Admired by all the boys for her charm and beauty, she shows she is more than this by being the head pilot of the combined TriThree mech.

Fyana (Proto-One)
Armored Trooper Votoms

ME_Fyana

Produced to be the perfect soldier, a cold blooded killer, Fyana is the complete opposite in many ways. Once laying eyes on protagonist Chirico Cuvie she would both fall in love and preserve her humanity and common sense in the process. As an AT pilot, she is a near equal to Chirico and is highly sought after by many renegade commanders.

Patty Ellington/Ginger

The short tempered loose cannon member of Dangaioh, Pai is blessed with super strength as well precise piloting skills. She is the last of the member of the Dangaioh quartet to join up, but by her personality she is often the first one to speak her opinion. Just don’t make her mad!

#9 : Aim for the Top! Gunbuster

Igunbuster1 want to preface this with a little Pink Floyd lyric… “Remember when you were young. You shown like the sun. Shine on You Crazy Diamond.” I can take this a couple ways in regards to Gunbuster. First it is a love letter homage to an era of anime and special effects shows from the 1960s to about 1980. This is Studio Gainax remembering the beauty of discovering such fantastic visual fun in their youth. But, I have to point out our main heroine, Noriko Takaya, as the second reason. In this six episode OVA everything and everybody to some certain extent got older and or eventually left the material plane of her existence. All except Noriko, who because of traveling so much in sub-space remains forever young and in the process missed out on being with most of her peers. How many times have you felt that no matter what you did, you could not share it with certain individuals you truly loved?

gunbuster2Gunbuster begins amid much promise and joy as sixteen year old Noriko Takaya is a new student at an Okinawa high school that specializes in training space pilots. She hopes to someday be like her father (an admiral who died while serving in space), like her idol the beautiful and talented Kazumi Amano and prove herself able to the Coach Ohta (COACHEE!). Right from the word go we are essentially brought into a shojo sports anime that passes itself as a sci-fi mecha series (Aim for the Ace+Yamato+Getter Robo+Top Gun (wait that’s a Hollywood film)=GUNBUSTAA!!). Who knew one had to train in robots and run laps, do sit-ups and various other forms of exercise. I thought our heroes just climbed into mecha and magically knew how to pilot them from instinct?

Gunbuster3As stated earlier this is a love letter, the real definition of “Fan Service.” Aside from a couple shots of the usual “Fan Service” this show drips references of the many series I listed earlier and more as cues to say this show is for you or us. You loved this show, this type of character, this scene, etc.? Gainax is a studio founded by fans after all and this is them paying homage to the highest degree. It’s anime about anime. And what makes Gunbuster special is the fact that yes, there are a lot of these references, but it also tugs at you over time. Similar to Evangelion or Nadia (both directed by Hideaki Anno) we start off in fun and games and eventually step into the darker side. But Gunbuster is not so much grim as it is poignant. Young Noriko grows up learning about falling in love, reconnecting with the her lost past and maturity in general. It has a sweetness that is missing from Evangelion or Nadia. And it is this tenderness that makes it hold up still today. Plus, the artwork and animation is gorgeous and handled with the greatest of care. Even the last episode fades to that old standard of black and white. The first time I saw it I thought something was wrong with my TV.

Now Studio Gainax aside, if there is one individual who makes this OVA very special for me, it would have to be the great Haruhiko Mikimoto. I love this man’s work (I DO!, I DO!, I DO!) and for me, nothing and I mean nothing tops his character designs. The elegance and grace that is apart of his early signature style shows true form here and I rank the designs as great as the work he did for the original Macross and Orguss. “I wish they all could be Mikimoto girls”  (to the tune of Beach Boys’ California Girls). There is always a certain twinkle in the eye of those who are conceptualized by my man, right?

Gunbuster4Gunbuster may have been the second official project of Studio Gainax, and the directorial debut of Mr. Anno, but it would set a precedent that would follow for this group into the 1990s. It also reflects back to those of us who were excited about the future and the possibility of traveling through outer space like it was driving down the highway and piloting large mecha… but alas all we have are smart phones and wifi, kind of a let down when you compare it to our utopian vision of the future. Still there is a possibility if we all believe it is possible and stay young in heart and mind. Let’s raise a toast to you Gunbuster… we love you. KANPAI!!!
